Kolmarg Eyesight Foundation (KEF) has partnered with the department of Ophthalmology, Federal Medical Centre, Keffi (FMCK) to provide free cataract surgery to indigent patients at the centre. The Executive Director of the organization, Prof. Olukorede Adenuga, in a media chat after the surgeries, said the foundation has a mission to eliminate avoidable blindness in sub-Saharan Africa by providing eye care services such as cataract surgery, glaucoma screening and treatment, and prescription of reading glasses free of charge to poor and disadvantaged persons in the region. The foundation appreciated the Management of FMCK, for its collaborative effort during the program.
The Head of Department of Ophthalmology at the medical centre, Dr. Patricia Musa expressed her gratitude to KEF for collaborating with the hospital, and said she looked forward to more of such programs in the future. She further disclosed that the Dr. Yahaya Baba Adamu-led management of FMCK is always open and ready to partner with committed NGOs in the areas of equipment and manpower to help offer free health care services to indigent patients.
Surgeries were performed on the 5th of April, 2022 at the medical centre’s main theatre with 19 patients benefiting from the program. Surgery consumables, postoperative medications and sunglasses were all provided free of charge by the foundation. The patients expressed their delight to both the hospital and the foundation for their kind gesture.
