Screening for Diabetic Retinopathy

Sub-Saharan Africa faces an epidemic of diabetes, with Nigeria having the highest burden followed by South Africa. Diabetes causes significant morbidity, including visual loss from diabetic retinopathy, which is largely preventable. Screening for DR can significantly prevent the loss of vision resulting from long-standing diabetes mellitus, and is also financially advantageous for both patients and health care systems.
